Ivory Carvings

These owls would be a conversation piece in any home. They are great examples of real Alaskan art. The artist, Don Ungott, passed away a couple of years ago and his well known owls are still in great demand. They are made from fresh walrus ivory. The feathers are hand scrimshawed on to the ivory and the eyes are a double inlay of fossilized walrus ivory and baleen. Each owl is different. They stand an average of 1½ inches tall.

This chess board is entirely hand crafted out of fossilized Woolly Mammoth Ivory. Each square and every game piece is a piece of history. The kings stand at 2 inches tall. The board is 8½ inches square; it folds in half, revealing fitted housing for the pieces inside. There is not a chess player out there that would not cherish this piece of art.

This is slice of history. It is a large piece of a fossilized Woolly Mammoth tusk, with minimal fill (necessary due to age). The patterns that exist in Mammoth ivory are clearly present throughout this piece. It has a felt base so it will not nick any surface it sits on. It measures 1¾ inches thick and is 7½ inches at the widest spot.

This is a slice of a fossilized Woolly Mammoth tooth. The tooth is 3¼ inches long. It is on a macramé hemp cord made by Alaskan artist Jamie Dubell, which is 28 inches long.

This is a hairclip handmade out of fossilized walrus ivory and tanned leather. It is made by Jeri. She has hand placed every individual bead on the surface of the leather. The clip measures 3½ inches long.
